I got a weird feeling when I first signed the lease, I should have trusted my gut. Maintenance wasn't bad, the roof leaked from time to time and they never seemed to get it fixed. The maintenance guy is just some guy they picked up off the street, nothing like waking up in the morning and having this guy staring in your window as he is cleaning the gutters. The windows were falling apart. The heat was completely inconsistent, as one morning it would 80 degrees in your apt and the next there would be no heat at all. But I would have dealt with all those issues had it not been for dealing with the Hollisters themselves. I had made plans to move out, and informed the Hollisters in writing of my plans, well before the notice deadline. The downstairs neighbors decided they would like to rent my place, but couldn't move in until a month after I moved out. Somehow, the Hollisters got it in their heads that I had agreed to stay an extra month, even though they had my notice in writing. However, when I moved out, I was very sternly told by Barbara Hollister that she was disappointed that "I had renegged on our verbal agreement." That agreement never happened, I shouldn't be held to some agreement between the neighbors and the landlord as to when I would move out, and I told her as much. Aside from this is the ridiculous check out cleaning list they have. You know they will charge you if you don't clean UNDER the refrigerator? Trust me, that place was cleaner than a hospital operating room when I moved out. Nonetheless, they nickled and dimed me on made up damages, and then withheld an entire months rent because as they said on their letter "we have witnesses that say you were going to stay an extra month." I don't care if you have the frickin' pope telling you I would stay an extra month, unless it's in writing it doesn't count. That's the law. Well, apparently they thought I didn't know the law, but I sued them in Court to get my deposit back, which I did, in full. Of course, it took four months and having to sit in court to do so. Trust me, they know the law. They have no problem dragging people into court who don't pay rent, or who miss the notice deadline and then get stuck in their lease for another year. They know what they're doing. But they will do everything they can to screw you, and when you get them in court they just put on that "we're just a small family operation who live by the golden rule" crap. Just know your rights, because your going to need to when dealing with these people. |
